Want to Know What Nutrition Means?

So you want to know what nutrition means...

Well the easiest way to answer that is to answer the question: What is the definition of nutrition?

In relation to this website you are asking these questions, trying to understand what Proper Nutrition really is.

You are probably trying to figure out just how much of what foods, or what dietary supplements you should be taking to ensure that you are getting the nutrients you need to do your body good.

If you want to know what nutrition means, and are asking What is the definition of nutrition...
MSN Encarta gives three answers:
1. processing of food: the process of absorbing nutrients from food and processing them in the body in order to keep healthy or to grow
2. science of food: the science that deals with foods and their effects on health
3. food foods: foods, or the minerals, vitamins, and other nourishing substances that they contain

From a medical standpoint:
Dorland's Medical Dictionary for Health Consumers answers the question as: the taking in and metabolism of nutrients (food and other nourishing material) by an organism so that life is maintained and growth can take place.

The American HeritageŽ Stedman's Medical Dictionary, 2nd Edition tells us:
1. The process by which living organisms obtain food and use it for growth, metabolism, and repair. Its stages include ingestion, digestion, absorption, transport, assimilation, and excretion.
2. The science that deals with food and nourishment, including dietary guidelines, food composition, and the roles that various nutrients have in maintaining health.

The American HeritageŽ Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition answers the question of what is the definition of nutrition with these 3 answers.
1. The process of nourishing or being nourished, especially the process by which a living organism assimilates food and uses it for growth and for replacement of tissues.
2. The science or study that deals with food and nourishment, especially in humans.
3. A source of nourishment; food.

Really, if you want to know what nutrition means. It is the process of getting enough of the proper building blocks for our bodies to be able to act most efficiently to give us the energy that we need and to allow it to do the healing that is does so effectively without causing weight gain or allowing us to keep getting ill.
